Which province's rate applies

The rate depends on the place of supply. For goods, that's usually where they're delivered; for services, generally where they're used. The CRA's examples: a Winnipeg store delivering a laptop to Nova Scotia charges 14% HST, but if the customer collects it in Winnipeg, the store charges 5% GST plus Manitoba's 7% PST.

How to add the tax

Multiply the price before tax by each rate and add them on. Example (Quebec): $100 before tax: GST $100 × 5% = $5.00, QST $100 × 9.975% = $9.975, rounded to $9.98. Total $114.98.

How to take the tax out of a tax-included price

Divide by 1 plus the total rate. Example (Ontario): $565 including 13% HST is $565 ÷ 1.13 = $500 before tax, so the HST is $65.

Common mistake: taking 13% of the tax-included price. 13% of $565 is $73.45, which overstates the HST by $8.45.

Zero-rated and exempt supplies

Zero-rated supplies, such as basic groceries, are taxed at 0% across Canada. Exempt supplies have no GST/HST at all. Show each supply's status on an invoice that mixes them.

Questions

Which rate do I charge?

The rate depends on the place of supply, usually where the goods are delivered or the service is used, not where your business is. The CRA's example: a Vancouver store delivering to Toronto charges Ontario's 13% HST.

How is PST or QST worked out with GST?

In British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec, a provincial tax is charged alongside the 5% GST. The CRA says to work out the GST on the price excluding PST. This calculator charges each tax on the same price before tax; check your province's rules for anything it treats differently.

How do I take GST/HST off a price that includes it?

Divide by 1 plus the total rate. In Ontario, $113 including 13% HST is $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13.

Do I register for PST or QST separately?

Yes. GST/HST registration is with the CRA; provincial sales taxes are registered with the province (Revenu Québec for QST). This calculator works out the amounts; whether you must charge each tax depends on your registrations and what you sell.

What must a GST/HST invoice show?

The CRA's requirements grow with the sale: from $100, your GST/HST registration number, the GST/HST charged (or that it's included) and each supply's status; from $500, also the buyer's name, a description and the terms of payment.
