How to add GST to a price

GST in New Zealand is 15% of the price before GST: multiply by 1.15.

Example: a job priced at $400 before GST. GST is $400 × 15% = $60, so the price including GST is $460.

How to work out the GST in a GST-inclusive price

A price including GST is 115% of the price before GST, so the GST is 3/23 of it: multiply by 3, then divide by 23.

Example: $460 including GST contains $460 × 3 ÷ 23 = $60 of GST, so the price before GST is $400.

Common mistake: taking 15% of a GST-inclusive price. 15% of $460 is $69, which overstates the GST by $9. Use 3/23 instead.

What your invoice needs to show

Inland Revenue's rules depend on the value of the sale (the "taxable supply information"):

  • $200 or less: your name or trading name, the date, a description of the goods or services and the amount paid.
  • Over $200 up to $1,000: also your GST number and the GST: the GST-exclusive amount, the GST and the GST-inclusive amount, or the GST-inclusive amount with a statement that it includes GST at the standard rate.
  • Over $1,000: also the buyer's name and at least one identifier, such as their address, phone number, email, NZBN or website.

For sales over $200, you must provide this information to a GST-registered buyer within 28 days if they ask for it.

Who charges GST

Only GST-registered businesses charge GST. You must register once your taxable sales reach $60,000 in 12 months (or you expect them to), and you can register voluntarily below that.

Questions

How do I add GST to a price in New Zealand?

Multiply the price before GST by 1.15. $200 plus GST is $200 + $30 = $230.

How do I work out the GST in a GST-inclusive price?

Multiply by 3 and divide by 23 (the GST fraction at 15%). $230 including GST contains $30 of GST, so the price before GST is $200. Taking 15% of the total overstates the GST.

What is the GST rate in New Zealand?

Inland Revenue gives the GST rate as 15%. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt.

Do I have to register for GST?

Inland Revenue says you must register when your taxable sales are at least $60,000 in a 12-month period (or are expected to be). You can register voluntarily below that.

Do I still need a tax invoice?

Inland Revenue now calls the required details "taxable supply information". For sales over $200 you show your GST number and the GST; over $1,000 you also show the buyer's name and an identifier. Many businesses still title the document a tax invoice.
