What to put on an invoice when you're not registered for GST

There's no law setting out what a regular invoice must contain, but business.gov.au lists common practice. The template has all of it:

  • the word “Invoice”. Not “tax invoice”: the ATO says businesses that aren't registered for GST must issue standard invoices
  • your business name and ABN
  • a unique invoice number and the date
  • a description of what you supplied, with quantities and prices
  • the total, your payment details and when it's due

Why your ABN matters: if you don't quote an ABN, a business that pays you generally has to withhold 47% of the payment and send it to the ATO, unless an exception applies (for example, some hobby or private payments). Putting your ABN on every invoice avoids that.

Example

DescriptionQtyPriceAmount
Garden clean-up (hours)4$55.00$220.00
Green waste removal1$80.00$80.00
Total (no GST charged)$300.00

When you'll need to switch to tax invoices

You must register for GST within 21 days of your GST turnover reaching $75,000 a year, or when you expect it to in your first year. Some businesses, including taxi and ride-sourcing drivers, must register whatever their turnover. Once you're registered, use the tax invoice template, and read how to invoice as a sole trader for the full picture.

Questions

Can I issue an invoice if I'm not registered for GST?

Yes. Issue a regular invoice titled “Invoice”. Don't add GST and don't call it a tax invoice.

Do I need to write “No GST” on my invoice?

There's no rule that says you must, but a line such as “No GST has been charged” helps customers who are used to seeing GST. The template includes it.

Should I put my ABN on a no-GST invoice?

Yes, if you have one. When you don't quote an ABN, a business paying you generally has to withhold 47% of the payment unless an exception applies.

When do I have to register for GST?

Within 21 days of your GST turnover reaching (or being expected to reach) $75,000 a year. Taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register whatever their turnover. Below the threshold registering is optional.
